Gastroscopy is a procedure that involves passing a long, thin, flexible tube with a video camera at the end through the mouth into the upper digestive system that allows the specialist doctor to inspect and examine the oesophagus, stomach and the first two parts of the duodenum. Gastroscopy is performed to diagnose problems in the upper intestinal tract. It can also be used to treat disease in the examined section, such as to stop bleeding from a peptic ulcer.

Colonoscopy is a procedure that involves passing a long, then, flexible tube with a video camera at the end through the back passage into the lower digestive system that allows the specialist to inspect and examine the large bowel and a short segment of the small bowel. Colonoscopy is performed to diagnose diseases in the lower intestinal tract, such as colorectal cancer. It can also be used to treat problems in the examined section, such as to remove polyps.
